AI in interviews

high confidence

Transparent AI use is welcome in technical assessments if you can explain your prompts and decisions, and take-home research must be cited. In interviews you should answer yourself rather than read AI output, and you are expected to disclose which AI tools you used.

Typical interview loop

How GitLab usually runs it for applied AI and LLM engineer roles.

  1. Application questionnaire

    Focus: Baseline technical fit

Individual-contributor applicants answer a short technical questionnaire with their application, and may get follow-up questions.

  2. Recruiter screen

    Focus: Background, logistics, fit

A 30 minute video call with a technical recruiter on your background, the skills in the job description, location and pay expectations.

  3. Technical interview

    Focus: Code review, async communication

A 90 minute session with an engineer, built around reviewing a merge request in a sample codebase, commenting on problems and implementing fixes.

  4. Engineering manager interview

    Focus: Behavior, values, collaboration

A 60 minute interview with an engineering manager, typically behavioral and about how you have worked on past projects.

  5. Director of Engineering interview

    Focus: Judgment, leadership fit

A final 60 minute conversation with the Director of Engineering before an offer decision.

  6. References and offer

    Focus: References, background screening

References are collected, with an optional chat with a member of a team-member resource group, followed by the offer and a background check.
