What this topic covers

At senior and staff level, behavioral rounds are less about whether you’re pleasant to work with and more about what level you get offered. Interviewers listen for the size of each story: did the impact stay with you, reach your whole team, or cross several teams and the wider org. They also listen for how you moved people you didn’t manage, how you turned an unclear ask into a plan, how you set technical direction and grew other engineers, and when you pushed back or said no to protect priorities. A good story at the wrong scope can still lead to a down-level, so senior AI engineers should pick stories where they owned the problem definition, for example deciding how a team measures model quality, not only the implementation. Reading a real engineering ladder helps you name that scope out loud.

You’re ready when you can

What interviewers check, from the resources below.

  • Can explain how scope (self, team, multiple teams) maps to junior, senior and staff
  • Can name the focus areas the round scores, such as ambiguity, perseverance and conflict
  • Can explain how a strong story at the wrong scope still leads to a lower-level offer
  • Has two stories that state their cross-team reach explicitly
  • Can describe a time you set technical direction for more than your own work
  • Has a mentoring or sponsorship story with a concrete outcome for the other person
  • Has a story about exploring an ambiguous problem and turning it into a plan
  • Can explain why glue work counts as leadership and how to make it visible
  • Can name what changes in scope and reach between senior and staff
  • Has a story about committing to a decision despite disagreement

What to study, in order

How software engineering behavioral interviews are evaluated at Meta (from an ex-Meta manager) (opens in a new tab)

    interviewing.io · Lior Neu-ner · 30 min · Free · checked 22 Oct 2026

    Why
This is one of the clearest public descriptions of how a behavioral round feeds the level decision: the same story is scored as junior, senior or staff depending on how far its impact reached. Knowing that helps you avoid a down-level.
    What to read
Read “Purpose of the interview” and “Interview Format”, then work through “Example Questions and Answers”, paying most attention to “Ability to be Proactive”, “Able to work in an unstructured environment” and “Conflict Resolution and Empathy”. End with “Putting it all together”. Then rewrite two of your own stories so the scope (team or multiple teams) is stated, not implied.
    What to skip
Skip the guest-post introduction and the book banner. The motivation section matters less once you’re past the early-career level.

What do Staff engineers actually do? (opens in a new tab)

    StaffEng · Will Larson · 25 min · Free · checked 22 Oct 2026

    Why
Senior behavioral interviewers are checking whether you already do the work of the level. This guide names that work, so you can tell which of your stories show it.
    What to read
Read “Setting technical direction”, “Mentorship and sponsorship”, “Providing engineering perspective”, “Exploration” and “Being Glue”. For each one, write down one story of your own that fits, or note the gap.
    What to skip
Skim “But will you still write software?” and “Slow but rewarding”; they’re about the job itself rather than the interview.
  3. Go deeper

IC5 Staff Machine Learning Engineer (opens in a new tab)

    Dropbox Engineering Career Framework · 30 min · Free · checked 22 Oct 2026

    Why
A real, public ladder page for staff ML engineers shows the exact words companies use for scope, influence and decision making. Matching your stories to that language makes your level easy to read.
    What to read
Read “Scope”, “Collaborative Reach” and “Impact Levers”, then the Results, Direction, Talent and Culture sections. Compare it with the IC4 senior page on the same site to see what changes between levels, and tag each of your stories with the line it supports.
    What to skip
Skim the “Craft” section; it’s about technical skills rather than behavioral signals.
